Oxygen Level 87 While Sleeping: What It Means and How to Respond

An oxygen level of 87 while sleeping can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Normal oxygen saturation levels typically stay above 95% during rest. When levels drop below 90%, it’s referred to as hypoxemia, which can disrupt sleep quality and put stress on vital organs.

Common causes of nighttime hypoxemia include obstructive sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other respiratory conditions. These may lead to symptoms like morning headaches, fatigue, and restlessness throughout the night.

From a TCM point of view, low oxygen levels during sleep may indicate Qi deficiency, Lung weakness, or Blood stagnation. Herbal formulas such as Bu Fei Tang or Sheng Mai San are often used to strengthen Lung function and enhance circulation.

Using a pulse oximeter can help track your oxygen saturation at home, and supplemental oxygen or CPAP therapy may be recommended for moderate to severe cases. However, long-term solutions should focus on treating the root cause.

At Phases Chinese Medicine Clinic, we offer an integrative approach to managing respiratory conditions contributing to low oxygen saturation during sleep, combining conventional assessments with holistic TCM care.
